Our dentist was thrilled with the following story… I picked my daughter up early from school today for her dentist appointment. When she got in the car, she gushed, “Mommy, Mommy, guess what I got for my hard boiled egg today? Four chocolate Christmas balls, a whole bag of chips, a packet of M&Ms, Twizzlers and some Sweet Tarts!!”
Hmmm, now I remember why – right after Halloween – I stopped sending a hardboiled egg and the accompanying egg slicer in my daughter’s lunch box: The other kids at the lunch table were so enamored by the simple egg slicing contraption and the yummy perfectly smooth egg slices it produced, they happily gave away whole candy bars for one slice of egg. And while my daughter likes to eat hardboiled eggs, what six year old would not trade one slice for an entire candy bar?
A couple weeks ago, I visited my daughter’s class to chat with the kids about nutrition and cooking; I gave away egg slicers and carrot peelers. The kids were beyond excited by the gifts. So I was under the assumption that the kids’ fascination with the simple machine had worn off. I was wrong. Thus, while I have no problem with a dessert in every lunch box, a lunchbox full of desserts is not great swap for a nutrient-rich egg. I told our dentist we will go back to eating hardboiled eggs as afterschool snacks.
