Puffins Cereal Review + Giveaway

Peanut Butter & Chocolate taste taster

I’ve been a Puffins cereal fan for awhile now from Barbara’s Bakery. And after being introduced to Cheerios, my daughter’s next favorite cereal became Puffins at a young age. So we both were excited to sample their latest flavor of Peanut Butter & Chocolate.

It’s rare to find a cereal that is low in sugar, has a list of wholesome ingredients, is a decent source of fiber, AND actually tastes GOOD (vs. feeling like you are chewing on tree bark.) Puffins cereal falls into all these categories. This cereal line – in fact all of Barbara’s products – contains no hydrogenated oils, artificial flavors, trans fat, artificial additives, refined white sugar and high fructose corn syrup.

Navigating the cereal aisle can be daunting. After reading the ingredients, the two main nutrients I look at on the Nutrition Label are sugar and fiber – I try to aim for 3 grams fiber or more and 6 grams sugar or less.

Here’s the sugar and fiber breakdown of the Puffin brands:
Puffins Original: 5 grams fiber | 5 grams sugar

Puffins Multigrain (Gluten Free): 3 grams fiber | 6 grams sugar

Puffins Peanut Butter: 2 grams fiber | 6 grams sugar

Puffins Peanut Butter & Chocolate: 3 grams fiber | 6 grams sugar

Puffins Cinnamon: 6 grams fiber | 6 grams sugar

Puffins Honey Rice (Gluten Free): 3 grams fiber | 6 grams sugar

And I’m happy to see this product line widely available now – back in the day, I could only find it at Whole Foods but now I pick up my Puffins during my three times a week Trader Joe’s runs.

While I love the Puffins Original and their Mulitgrain version, if I had to choose, the Peanut Butter & Chocolate is my new favorite. I think the 5 year old agrees.

  1. We love Barbara’s Puffin’s too! They also distribute my husband’s favorite cereal, Weetabix. Plus they make some mighty tasty chocolate chip animal crackers that are accidentally vegan! Woohoo!

    • I haven’t had Weetabix in years! You’ve inspired me to buy a box next shopping trip. I love their oatmeal animal crackers, too.

      • Oh! You have to get some then! Too bad Barbara’s didn’t include some for you ;)

I haven’t tried the oatmeal animal crackers as we are chocolate chip fiends, but you’ve inspired me!

  2. I love Puffins but definitely want to try the new flavors. I love Barbara’s Shredded Spoonfuls!

  3. ooo. i love me some puffins. always happy when i find a gluten-free box! peanut butter & chocolate?! super yum…. now they need to make it gluten-free too! :)

  4. Molly Gallagher says:

We love anything with chocolate and peanut butter, so we’ll definitely give these a try!! We are a Honey Nut Cheerios house and it’s getting a bit boring!!

  5. Card board is better than this cereal…and that’s a apples to apples comparison. There’s no taste to be found anywhere in the box. My 8 year old took one whiff a gave an emphatic “No way!”
