What is blue hyssop you may ask? A month ago, I couldn’t have told you but this year I decided to sign up for the Community Supported Medicine Share (CSM) offered by my CSA coop, Lancaster Farm Fresh (which represents over 70 farms around Lancaster County, PA) and I’m slowly becoming more educated about the healing power of different herbs, plants and flowers like blue hyssop.
The all-organic offerings come from Lancaster Farmacy (such a great name!) and so far, I’ve gotten some interesting dried herbs for teas, a super cool “Beat Feet” foot soak, salves and fresh herbs like sage, yarrow and blue hyssop.
Most of the herbs can be used fresh or dried in a tincture or a poultice. Since I’m not quite the Pioneer Medicine Woman yet, I’ve decided to use the herbs for other recommendations – like sage in a homemade disinfecting spray (will get back to you on that one!) and blue hyssop in this lemonade.
Blue hyssop looks like the lavender plant and has long been used as a purifier. You can use to make a cough syrup or a calming tea. It has a rather strong, earthy flavor with a hint of mint and camphor and can be used in soups, salads or drinks like this lemonade.
If you don’t have blue hyssop for your lemonade, you could use all kinds of herbs instead like mint, basil, tarragon, thyme – the sky’s the limit! Here’s some herbal lemonade inspiration from Cooking Light:
